Whispers from Forbidden Earth is soon coming out in paperback . . .Woot!!!!. That leaves me in a bit of a quandary, however. I'm trying to decide between two covers and would LOVE some feedback. The story is a fantasy written for ages 8 and up. I love the colors on one but that's the adult in me talking.
Let me know what you think, especially the children. They're the reason I wrote the story in the first place.
Thanks --Mark
I like the one on the left better, but I'll ask my children when they wake up.
ReplyDeleteI've collected votes from the Kiddos.
ReplyDeleteBoy, age 5: right
Boy, age 9: right
Girl, age 12: left
Thanks for responding. This has been a fun exercise. The votes have gone right down the middle in the other forums where I posted the question. I think the left cover attracts older readers, as your daughter would indicate. I do love the left cover, but as someone else mentioned, it has more of a scifi motif. The right cover is more fantasy related. Thanks again for responding!
ReplyDeleteFor this demographic, I like the one on the right. It looks high fantasy and will appeal to Eragon and Harry Potter fans, I believe. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your reply, I have to agree with you. I always have to keep in mind that I need to look at the whole process from a child's perspective, not an adult's.
DeleteThe left cover to me looks more inviting. If I were browsing in a bookstore, I'd be more inclined to pick up the left than the right.
ReplyDeleteIt's great to hear from you. I love the left cover too, but to me it may appear more scifi than fantasy. It seems the left cover is attracting the older reader. The younger kids under 10 seem to prefer the right cover. I do appreciate your comment! This has been interesting.
DeleteThe one on the left (pastel) may be more attractive to female readers (that's a guess) but it will be less attractive to male readers (that's not a guess). So, if you're assuming a mixed-gender readership, I think the one on the right is the one you want to use. Not that many doods want to be seen hauling around a magenta book. Ridiculous, I know, but I'm reasonably sure it's true.
ReplyDeleteYou're not the first person to mention the color from a male vs female perspective. Interesting. For my target age group (8 and up), I wonder how much color will play in purchasing decisions. From the responses I've received, the dragon is attracting the younger kids.
DeleteI'm a leftie! But I'm also almost thirty... =)
ReplyDeleteLoL I appreciate the reply. Thank you.
